Strudel.cc
Live coding some beats (and visuals) in the browser with strudel.cc.
details
Strudel.cc is a JavaScript rendition of TidalCycles that combines coding and audio synthesis to make some neat beats, optionally with funky visuals via hydra. It’s often used for Algoraves, where the music is live coded.
I followed this workshop by Side-Gallery (also available in written form). I’m only scratching the surface, but I love how simple it is and how little music knowledge you need. Give it a try, it’s quite fun <3
Feel free to change numbers in the samples above: Ctrl+Enter plays, Ctrl+. stops.
sounds
A simple beat that’s easy to make more complex. Best with stereo audio ;)
My final sample of the workshop, trying out more features: device sensors drive the gain (mobile only), Shabda pulls in text-to-speech samples from the web, and hydra adds visuals.
More samples to open in the REPL:
- First beat: default drum machine and casio samples
- Punchcard: visualising notes and rhythm
- Complex rhythm: the stereo beat with some variation
- More samples: volume, speed and randomness
- Sine waves: modulating plain sine waves
