i know it
A university animation in Blender where two 2D people sit in a room slowly filling with stylised water.
details
In my first semester at FH Hagenberg we created an animation in Blender based on a poem by my teammate Lea. Two people sit in a room that slowly fills with water. The people are 2D, made with Blender’s Grease Pencil; the environment and water are 3D. My part was everything related to the water. Only the first half of the animation is done so far.
tech
The water is a shader with a layered Voronoi texture that flows and distorts naturally, inspired by an Instagram post. Blender’s dynamic paint system draws outlines around objects intersecting the water plane. Water drops were either animated by hand via a deform rig, spawned by particle systems (as dynamic paint brushes), or driven by fluid simulations and lattices.
Early on I used wave modifiers and a geometry nodes proximity approach for the intersections, and went through toon tests, fluid sim tests and even a realistic Cycles water. I learnt a lot about shaders, modifiers and animation in Blender, and about working as a team on a shared animation.
